“Being a Trainee gives me the opportunity to actively participate in the everyday life of the company, learning about every department.”
As part of the Trainee Program, I have a Cargill manager as a mentor who can provide knowledge, insight and perspective on my professional development and career growth. This program also allows me to connect with colleagues to help accelerate performance, transfer knowledge and build relationships across the organization.
Describe your work responsibilities and the importance of your role.
Being a Trainee gives me the opportunity to actively participate in the everyday life of the company, learning about every department. My work responsibilities change from department to department; mainly I have to give support for the operative work and the daily work of the departments.
Describe your day-to-day activities and the skills needed to perform well
I am currently in our Finance department, giving support for controlling activities. My day-to-day activities support the commercial department by checking daily positions, prices, hedging and forward rates. I also support the delivery of timely and accurate analysis, reports and month end closing. To perform well, I need to have strong analytical skills, the ability to take responsibility and meet the deadlines.
Describe your career path. Where did you start and how did you get to where you are today?
My two-year training program is still in progress. So far in the first phase of the program I have spent 6 weeks at each desk (trading, sales, crop input and logistics department) so all together it is 24 weeks. In the second phase I spent 3 months in sales and 3 months in the finance department. I was also involved in several projects and started the European Graduate Program and Trading Academy which are also part of my training program.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
Most rewarding thing about my work is that due to the European Graduate Program I get the chance to travel in Europe meeting colleagues from abroad and building relationships across the global Cargill organization.
Why did you choose to join Cargill and what keeps you here? In other words, how has a career at Cargill helped you to thrive?
I chose to join Cargill because I have a family background in agriculture and thought that this company would be the best place to put to use the knowledge I acquired in college. The great atmosphere, the high caliber people, the never ending opportunities to learn and evolve are the things which are keeping me here.
What advice would you give someone interested in a career at Cargill like yours?
Be interested in agribusiness and commercial, be open minded and willing to work hard, tolerating seasonal peaks. Take every chance and opportunity you get and never be afraid to ask questions and share your ideas. Just go for it.
Share an interesting tidbit about yourself such as hobbies, volunteerism, favorite foods or activities, accomplishments inside or outside of work.
I spend my free time with friends and family, and I really love to read and watch sports broadcasts.
